The art of storytelling and pictorial depictions is as old as our collective consciousness. From the caves of Ajanta and Chauvet to the stories of a Thousand and One Nights (famously The Arabian Nights) to the modern storytelling by legends as Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Haruki Murakami, our fascination with stories is never ending.
Gay Stories Through Ages
While the concept of brandishing homosexuality is fairly new to most parts of the world, the art of gay storytelling isn’t. In ancient Hindu literature there are quite a few characters with homosexual predisposition as there were no labels back then. It is the same with Persian and Urdu literature where tales of homo-inclined characters are scattered throughout the literature (and intensely being whitewashed or deleted now a days). I found some interesting read while researching for this article.

I thought to collect a list of all my favourite stories so you don’t have to go too far for them.
Gay Short Stories
Short stories are my favourite genre because they add that little extra kick that has your head spinning without having to go through an entire book. Some of them delve so deep into the emotions in so few words, it really gets me probing about how I’d feel about that. Luckily there’s quite a few blogs that have kept these stories alive.
Two of my favourites are Reedsy gay section and Lost Gay Fiction. Both these simple website offers a diverse range of stories that are not confined to the real of gay coming out stories. Some of these gay stories explore other emotions especially in a homo normal world where we go beyond the trauma of coming out or trying to fit in. The best gay stories for me from these two sources are
The Man In The Dark by Mansel Stimpson for the beautiful tension it offers of a first date and Red and Blue by Nikita Linivenka. I loved the emotion around the transformation. in this gay short story. The best gay stories are the ones that explore further than just the surface, I think that goes without saying (but I am saying it nonetheless for myself ;)).
Gay Stories In Books
If you want to curl up next tot he fireplace with the sound of wood crackling with a nice cup of green tea, there are plenty of beautiful gay stories explored further in books. You can explore a good collection here by Dr Jeff E. Katcherian. These Europe inspired books will make you want to visit the places in Europe they were inspired by and set in.
If you love a good spicy story, explore these 10 beautifully written gay books by South Asian authors. The books range from gay fiction to gay erotica and the history of gay stories and love throughout ages.
Gay Stories in Media
There is no lack of beautiful gay stories in the form of gay television series and gay movies. i still remember the first time I watched the Bird cage, I was just utterly in love with the entire story, the acting of Robin Williams and Nathan really inspired me. I imagined a world where being gay was normal. It feared some resemblance to normality at least. Sitting in a country imagining this where you could be killed for being gay had a weird sense of satisfaction, I can tell you that.
Another recent movie that I really loved was God’s Own Country. It was everything I expect from a fun movie with two beautiful men. Josh O’Connor is my new crush.
If you’re just looking for some raunchy gay steamy stuff, Another Gay Story series has you covered completely.
Netflix also has a fairly good collection of gay stories, you can explore more here.
Gay Sex Stories
Gay erotic stories are amazing. The reason i prefer them to gay porn is they let you run your imagination wild. At least mine runs pretty wild. While porn has the limitation of just seeing, gay sex stories let you be part of the story. When i was growing up, my introduction to the gay sex was not via porn but via gay sex stories. You don’t have to have a perfect body or any other stereotypical straits so many gay men are obsessed with these days. Just dive in and be who you want to be with simple character which have nothing but lust, sex and romance on their minds.
Another reason for liking gay sex stories is the diversity of genres from daddy-twink type stuff to bears on a beach, there are very few limits and I must admit, I wrote a few as well. Sadly I lost these gay stories with time, I still have a fond memory of exploring my sexuality through these gay erotic stories.
There is no lack of gay sex stories only, I find Literotica, Nifty and GayDemon to be pretty good source with plenty of different gay sex stories covering a vast range of scenarios. For my desi and indian gay friends, check out Hindi Gay Story. The website is dedicated entirely to gay sex stories for Indian gay community.
Gay Stories Around The World
A big perk of travelling is the range of gay stories, opinions and lifestyles I got exposure to. I always wanted to share these absolutely incredible gay stories but didn’t know how to go about it. I finally realised I wanted to showcase it here not only for people to find what it is like being LGBT in different cultures but also to find solace that despite all the negativity, all the hardships and even threats to our lives, we always find love around us.
These gay stories come from people I know or I have met over the years; every one of them is unique and equally dear to me and every story offers hope as well as advice for you if you travel to their country.
Check out my guide on Safe Travelling.
Disclaimer: I have made some changes to protect the identities of people in countries where it could cause them harm. If you have a unique story to share, please reach out to me, I’d be happy to showcase it.
